The Happy Reader, a bookish magazine for avid readers, from Penguin, is a very beautifully designed and comfortably sized magazine about reading.

It’s very unassuming and doesn’t make an effort to be eye-catching. However, it’s one of the easier reads I’ve had. Another interesting aspect is that the layout slightly tweaks from issue to issue without losing it’s identity, as Penguin’s magazine designer, Matt Young puts it “We want it to be a living thing, rather than just having a template that we keep dropping content into. The cover is always slightly different, the contents have moved to the front in this issue having always been on the back page, and the endpapers always change and often have a subtle link to the book of the season.”
It's wonderful how magazine design can lead us periodically from issue to issue while creating a wonderful graphic patrimony.
